How to Take Dominion Over Your Thoughts
Did you know you can choose what you think about? Too often, we operate on mental autopilot, replaying loops of negativity, worry, or self-doubt. But just like defensive driving on the road keeps us safe, "defensive driving" in our thought life helps us navigate challenges and maintain mental clarity. Holistic self-defense isn’t just about protecting your body; it’s about defending your mind, too.
Today, I took my lunch break to get outside, listen to Tony Robbins, and move my body. This small act of stepping away from the desk and resetting my mind reminded me of how powerful it is to intentionally direct our thoughts. Here are a few ways you can take dominion over your mind and break free from negative thinking patterns:
Practice Awareness: Pay attention to what you’re thinking about. When a negative thought arises, don’t let it take root—acknowledge it and choose to replace it with something positive or productive.
Use Movement to Shift Your Energy: Whether it’s a quick walk, stretching, or dancing to your favorite song, movement helps release tension and create space for clarity.
Breathe with Purpose: Deep, mindful breathing activates your parasympathetic nervous system, calming your mind and body. Try inhaling for four counts, holding for four counts, and exhaling for six counts.
Surround Yourself with Mentors: Seek out voices that inspire growth and challenge your mindset. Books, podcasts, or videos from thought leaders like Tony Robbins can give you a fresh perspective and motivation to keep moving forward.
Meditate to Reset: A few minutes of meditation each day can help you clear mental clutter and strengthen your focus. Meditation doesn’t have to be complicated—just sit quietly and focus on your breath or a calming thought.
Your mind is one of your greatest assets. By taking control of your thoughts and breaking free from autopilot, you’ll unlock resilience, clarity, and peace. So, the next time you feel stuck in a mental loop, remember: you CAN think about what you’re thinking about—and you CAN choose better.
