Title: Before the Cookie: How I Shifted My Mood and Protected My Health

We’ve all had those days—the ones where nothing goes right, everything feels like it’s crumbling, and all you want to do is crawl under a blanket with something sweet.

I recently had that kind of day. One thing after another kept going wrong, and by the end of it, I was mentally and emotionally drained. A friend, with the best intentions, handed me a cookie and said, “Just eat this. It’ll make you feel better.”

I paused.

And in that pause, I found an opportunity to practice something I teach often: holistic self-defense.

Instead of reacting to my emotions with food, I asked myself what I really needed.

What I Did Instead

I moved my body.
Just a quick workout. Nothing fancy. But it helped clear my head and shift my emotional state in a powerful way.

I fueled my body.
After moving, I reached for some protein. Protein helps regulate blood sugar and stabilizes your mood, making it easier to think clearly and feel balanced.

Then I ate the cookie.
And I enjoyed it so much more because I wasn’t using it to escape. I was using it to celebrate how I took care of myself first.

This wasn’t about deprivation. It was about empowerment.

What This Has to Do With Holistic Self-Defense

Most people think self-defense only happens in dark alleys or scary situations. But the truth is, self-defense is also about the choices we make daily to protect our energy, health, and mindset.

Emotional eating, burnout, self-neglect—these things can sneak up on us. But we can defend ourselves from falling into cycles that don’t serve us. It starts with awareness. Then movement. Then intention.

Try This Next Time You're Spiraling:

  • Pause. Take a breath and ask yourself: What do I really need?

  • Move. Go for a walk, stretch, do some squats. Anything to reconnect with your body.

  • Nourish. Reach for protein or a nourishing snack that supports your mood and blood sugar.

  • Enjoy. If you still want the treat, eat it—but do it with joy, not guilt.

This is the kind of self-defense that changes lives from the inside out.
